STUDENT / ARTIST INTERVIEWS

Students enrolled in SUNY New Paltz's Feature Writing class - an upper-level writing course in the Department of Digital Media and Journalism, - conducted interviews with many of the Golden Age of New Paltz artists.

The project started at the end of January 2018 by matching students with artists from the list supplied by curator Jack Murphy. Many of the interviews were conducted in person in the artists’ homes and studios.

The students learned about how to prepare for and conduct an interview. Students studied professional examples of the Q&A article form (including their teacher’s own published work) and learned how to edit a raw transcript into a publication-quality article. They each took the assignment through 3-4 drafts, with the last steps completed in mid-March 2018.

The class was taught by Lisa Phillips an associate professor of journalism and deputy chair of the Department of Digital Media and Journalism. Phillips is an author and has published articles in many national newspapers and magazines (The New York Times, Washington Post, Psychology Today, Cosmopolitan, Salon and others).
